About

I am a late baby boomer who loves to garden.  I got really hooked into the hobby (I’m not sure hobby is the right word, maybe ‘obsession?’) when I lived in Deep Cove, North Vancouver.  There is an active and excellent Garden Club in Deep Cove and from their members I learned much of the basics of gardening, along with plant identification, a little garden design and met a ton of excellent people.  After just about planting every square inch of our city sized property in Deep Cove, we looked carefully for a larger property in our move to Vancouver Island.

We chose Cobble Hill, BC (about 30 minutes north of Victoria, BC) because certain parts will tolerate Zone 9 plants, overall the growing conditions are excellent, and if you are a consultant like I am you can get to the Victoria airport in less time than from our Deep Cove house!

Our property is just over 2 acres, although much is taken up by the Shawnigan River that runs through the property, a small soggy forest, and a ring of beautiful, majestic cedar trees.  Boy, they are beautiful, but trying to grow anything under or around them is challenging.  We’ve managed snowdrops and a few hardy brunnera so far.

I garden nearly all the days I can but draw the line at very rainy days.  I am this year’s President of the Mill Bay Garden Club, belong to the BC Iris Society and the BC Heather Society and many of my friends and acquaintances here on the Island are gardening-based.

Helping me garden is Ivy the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and Holly the Chocolate Lab (and sometimes Maggie, the Chocolate Lab who comes to visit when her Mom and Dad go vacationing).

Enjoy the blog, its all about gardening, with a bit of dogs, Cowichan Valley, garden club activities and humour thrown in!

The intense concentration associated with dog biscuits!

  1. Hi. Thanks for following my site and twitter too. I have added you on as well.
My sister lives in Duncan and my husbands family in Victoria and Sidney.
My brother-in-law and his wife used to own Victoria Garden Center at Mattock ?? Farm. Have you ever been there?

    • I surely do know Mattock’s Farm Market. The entire complex has some excellent shopping and the garden centre plant material was excellent – at least on my last visit. What a small world – Cobble Hill is just about right in the middle between Victoria and Duncan and we are often in Sidney coming or going to the airport. I am going to try and drop my ‘Canadian Blogger’ little icon into the blog tonight. I’m not too bad technically, but not too good either! Ha! Ain’t social media great?

  2. Hello up in Cobble Hill! I’m in Victoria and just started blogging myself – http://dustybay.blogspot.com/ – come by for a visit! Great blog (I found you on Botanical) Happy Spring!

  3. Hi, I have a 10 year old pembroke named Russell, I got him from a breeder in Duncan. I’ve since lost her information, but are you aware of any breeders on the island? I’m starting to think about giving Russell a little friend.

    • There was once a breeder in Duncan and a very famous one in Victoria, but both of them are no longer in the area. I got my corgi from a breeder in Quesnel, but she doesn’t breed corgis any more. I recently separated and I didn’t get the corgi (very devastating) but I follow many corgi breeders on Facebook. One of the best is Wendy Wendt from Wendtworth Corgis. She’s in Ohio and its quite a drive, but I’m going to get a ‘Low Rider’ (that’s what she calls her corgis) later this year. I believe there is a Corgi breeder in Calgary and there are several in Washington and Oregon.
